What does this error mean?

Synapse Studio returns a 403 Forbidden error when trying to access the workspace, run queries, or view resources.

Common causes

• 1The user is not assigned the Synapse Administrator or Synapse Contributor role in Synapse RBAC
• 2User has Azure RBAC access to the resource group but not Synapse workspace-level RBAC
• 3Guest account or external user not added as a workspace user
• 4Conditional access policy blocking access from the current network or device

How to fix it

1. 1Step 1: Go to Synapse Studio > Manage > Access Control and assign the appropriate Synapse role.
2. 2Step 2: Ensure the user also has Azure RBAC Reader role on the workspace resource.
3. 3Step 3: For external accounts, add them explicitly as workspace users in Manage > Access Control.
4. 4Step 4: Check Azure AD Conditional Access policies that might block the user.
