Power BI Refresh Error:
Refresh schedule disabled due to consecutive failures
What does this error mean?
Power BI automatically disables the refresh schedule when a dataset fails multiple consecutive times. Once disabled, the dataset will not refresh until the schedule is manually re-enabled.
Common causes
- 1An underlying error (credentials, gateway, data source) caused repeated failures and Power BI gave up
- 2The gateway went offline for an extended period and all scheduled refreshes failed
- 3Credentials expired and were not renewed before Power BI reached its failure threshold
- 4A source system outage caused multiple consecutive refresh failures
How to fix it
- 1Go to the dataset in Power BI Service → Settings → Scheduled refresh
- 2Investigate and fix the root cause of the failures first (check the refresh history for the specific error)
- 3Toggle the scheduled refresh off and back on to re-enable it
- 4Set up MetricSign alerts so you are notified on the first failure — catching it early prevents the schedule from being disabled
- 5Consider reducing the refresh frequency to reduce the chance of hitting the failure threshold during transient outages
