Power BI Refresh Error:
Gateway cluster not found

What does this error mean?

The gateway cluster that was previously associated with this dataset no longer exists or is no longer accessible. This differs from 'no gateway configured' — a gateway WAS configured but it has since been removed.

Common causes

  • 1The gateway cluster was deleted from Power BI Service by an admin
  • 2All gateway machines in the cluster were decommissioned without migrating datasets
  • 3The gateway registration was invalidated due to a machine name or domain change
  • 4The tenant or workspace admin removed the gateway as part of an infrastructure cleanup

How to fix it

  1. 1Go to Power BI Service → Settings → Manage gateways to see available gateway clusters
  2. 2If the cluster is missing, a new gateway must be installed and configured on a machine with access to the data source
  3. 3After setting up the new gateway, go to each affected dataset → Settings → Gateway connections and map to the new gateway
  4. 4Before decommissioning gateways, always migrate dataset mappings first to avoid this situation
  5. 5Document which datasets use which gateway clusters to make future migrations easier
