Power BI Refresh Error:
A gateway is required but none is configured

What does this error mean?

The dataset uses a data source that requires an on-premises data gateway, but no gateway is associated with this dataset in Power BI Service.

Common causes

  • 1The dataset was published for the first time and gateway setup was not completed in Power BI Service
  • 2The gateway that was previously associated was uninstalled or removed
  • 3The dataset was moved to a different workspace where the gateway cluster is not shared
  • 4The gateway was removed from the organization's gateway cluster by an admin
  • 5The data source connection string changed and the new connection is not mapped to any gateway source

How to fix it

  1. 1Go to Power BI Service → Settings → Datasets → select the dataset → Gateway connections.
  2. 2If a gateway is available in the list, map the dataset's data source to the correct gateway source.
  3. 3If no gateway appears, install the on-premises data gateway on a machine that can reach the data source.
  4. 4Ensure the gateway admin has shared the gateway with your workspace or your account.
  5. 5After mapping, trigger a manual refresh to verify the gateway connection is working before relying on scheduled refresh.

Frequently asked questions

Does this error affect all datasets using the same gateway?

Yes — all datasets routed through the affected gateway will fail simultaneously. Resolving the gateway configuration or credential issue restores all of them at once.

Does this error appear in Power BI Desktop?

No — Power BI Desktop connects directly to data sources. Gateway errors only occur when Power BI Service initiates a scheduled or manual refresh.

Can this error resolve itself without intervention?

No — gateway errors require manual action: re-entering credentials, restarting the gateway service, or correcting the network path between the gateway and the data source.

How long does it typically take to fix?

A simple credential refresh takes 5–10 minutes. Network or firewall issues can take 30–120 minutes depending on your infrastructure access.
