Power BI Refresh Error:
DM_GWPipeline_Client_GatewayUnreachable
What does this error mean?
Power BI Service (cloud) cannot reach the on-premises data gateway. The gateway is offline, its Service Bus connection is broken, or it is not properly registered with Power BI Service. Note: this error is about Power BI failing to reach the gateway — not the gateway failing to reach your data source.
Common causes
- 1The on-premises data gateway Windows service has stopped on the gateway machine
- 2The gateway machine is offline, rebooting, or otherwise unreachable from the internet
- 3Outbound traffic from the gateway machine to Azure Service Bus (*.servicebus.windows.net on port 443 or 5671) is blocked
- 4The gateway registration has expired or been invalidated — for example after a machine domain or name change
- 5All nodes in a gateway cluster are offline simultaneously
How to fix it
- 1Open the On-premises data gateway application on the gateway machine — if it shows 'The gateway is offline', that confirms the issue
- 2Check the Windows Services console: ensure 'On-premises data gateway service' is started and set to Automatic start
- 3Verify outbound connectivity from the gateway machine to *.servicebus.windows.net on port 443 and 5671
- 4Run the gateway connectivity diagnostics from the gateway app's Status tab
- 5If the gateway service is running but showing offline, restart it and wait 2–3 minutes for Service Bus reconnection
- 6If the gateway registration is broken, re-register the gateway in the gateway app using the recovery key
