High severitycapacity
Power BI Refresh Error:
The dataset exceeds the memory limit
What does this error mean?
The dataset is too large to fit within the memory allocated to your Power BI capacity tier. Power BI loads the entire dataset into memory during refresh; if it does not fit, the refresh fails.
Common causes
- 1The source data volume grew past the memory limit of your Power BI SKU
- 2Inefficient data modeling with many duplicated or unnecessary columns increases memory footprint
- 3Wide tables with many text columns — text is expensive in memory due to dictionary encoding
- 4Many calculated columns added to the model that are materialized in memory
- 5Shared Premium capacity is overloaded by concurrent large refreshes from other workspaces
How to fix it
- 1Remove columns that are not used in any report — every unused column wastes memory
- 2Use summarized tables instead of row-level detail for large fact tables where possible
- 3Implement incremental refresh to split the dataset into smaller partitions
- 4Upgrade to a higher Premium SKU (e.g., P1 → P2) to get more memory per dataset
- 5Set storage mode to DirectQuery or Composite mode for large tables that do not need to be fully imported
- 6Use the Best Practice Analyzer in Tabular Editor to find memory-optimization opportunities
